What is a half birthday?
A half birthday is six calendar months from your regular birthday. If your birthday is June 7, your half birthday is December 7. If your birthday falls near the end of a month, the calculator uses the last valid day when needed.
Why celebrate a half birthday?
Some families use half birthdays for a small bit of fun, especially when a regular birthday lands near a major holiday or during school vacation. You do not need a reason, though. Cake works in any month.
Is a half birthday always 182 or 183 days later?
No. Calendar months have different lengths, so six months is not always the same number of days. This calculator uses calendar months rather than dividing a year in half by hours.
Half birthday examples
A January 12 birthday has a July 12 half birthday. A March 5 birthday has a September 5 half birthday. The month changes by six while the day usually stays the same.
Dates at the end of a month need a little care. If adding six months lands in a month that does not contain that day, the calculator uses the last valid day of that month.
Half birthday versus 182.5 days
There are two ways people sometimes describe a half birthday. This site uses the common calendar approach of adding six months. It does not divide the number of hours in a year by two.
That choice keeps the date easy to understand and makes a half birthday repeat on the same day number whenever the destination month has that date.
