Birth Year Calculator: What Year Was I Born?
Enter an age to estimate the year of birth. If you know whether the birthday had already happened on the date you are checking, the calculator can narrow the answer to one year.

Estimate a birth year from age
Your birth year is usually the reference year minus your age. If your birthday had not happened yet by that date, subtract one more year. If you are not sure whether it had happened, two adjacent birth years may both be possible.
How do I find what year I was born?
If you know your age but not the year you were born, start with the year of the date you are checking. Subtract your completed age. That gives one possible birth year.
The birthday matters because your age changes only when your birthday arrives. If your birthday had already happened by the reference date, the simple subtraction is the birth year. If your birthday was still coming later in the year, the birth year is one year earlier.
Why can my age point to two birth years?
Imagine two people who are both 25 on September 7, 2026. One already had a birthday in March and was born in 2001. The other has a birthday in December and was born in 2000. They have the same age on September 7 but different birth years.
Age alone does not always identify one exact year. If you choose Not sure, this calculator shows both possible years and the full birth-date window that would produce the entered age on the reference date.
What is the possible birth-date range?
The range shows every birthday that could match the entered completed age on the reference date. For example, someone who is 25 on March 31, 2026 could have been born from April 1, 2000 through March 31, 2001.
If you know whether the birthday had already happened, the year can be narrowed further. To find the exact month and day, though, you still need more information than age alone.
Can I calculate a birth year for a past date?
Yes. The reference date does not have to be today. This is handy when an old record, photo, school year or family story tells you how old someone was at a particular time.
Enter the age they had then and the date you are checking. The calculation uses that reference year, which avoids the mistake of subtracting the age from the current year when the question is really about the past.
Can I calculate a birth year for a future date?
You can also use a future reference date if you know the age a person will have then. The same rule applies: the result depends on whether the birthday has happened by that future date.
If you already know the birth date and want to know the future age instead, use the Age on a Date Calculator. That page answers the reverse question.
Birth year calculator versus age calculator
The main Age Calculator starts with a date of birth and tells you the age. This Birth Year Calculator starts with an age and works backward to estimate the year of birth. They solve opposite sides of the same calendar question.
If you know two complete birthdays and want the gap between them, use the Age Difference Calculator. If you know a birthday and want the next celebration date, use the Birthday Calculator.
What about February 29 birthdays?
Leap-day birthdays are real dates, so the calculator uses the same calendar-aware date handling as the rest of Fun Age Calculator. A range can cross leap years without treating every year as exactly 365 days.
When only an age is known, a February 29 birthday is just one possible date within the wider range. You still need the actual month and day to identify it exactly.
Birth year questions
What year was I born if I know my age?
Subtract your age from the reference year if your birthday had already happened by that date. If it had not happened yet, subtract one more year.
Why can there be two possible birth years?
Age alone can cover parts of two adjacent calendar years. Knowing whether the birthday had already happened on the reference date narrows the answer to one year.
Can I use a past or future reference date?
Yes. Enter the age the person had on that date, then choose the reference date. The calculator uses that year instead of always using today.
Can age alone tell me an exact birthday?
No. Age alone can estimate the birth year or a range of possible birth dates, but an exact birthday requires the month and day too.
What if I already know the full birthday?
Use the main Age Calculator instead. It works in the other direction and calculates an exact age from a complete date of birth.
Does this work for leap years?
Yes. The possible birth-date range follows real calendar dates and the same leap-day handling used throughout Fun Age Calculator.
